No-Show Policy for ASTD St. Louis Meetings:
Members and/or guests will have up to 5 days prior to a meeting to cancel. Due to obligations we have with the venue, cancellations not received within this time frame must be charged at the full price. If a member or guest RSVPs and indicates that s/he will pay at the door, then does not attend the meeting, that member or guest will be billed for the cost of the event. You are always welcome to send a substitute if your plans change unexpectedly.

Assessments through the Learning Process

Speaker:  Doug Peterson, Demonstrations Systems Manager, Questionmark

This interactive presentation will explore the different types of assessments and explain their respective applications, with particular emphasis on how trainers and instructional designers can use assessments such as surveys, quizzes, tests and exams to enhance the learning process.  It will also examine the connection between organizational needs and quality assessment practices.

Who will benefit and how:

This presentation will help learning strategists, training managers and instructional designers address their roles as coaches, learning designers and deliverers of effective training. It addresses the role of assessments in measuring the effectiveness of social learning as well as formal training, giving learners constructive feedback and showing training managers which subject matter areas require more attention.

  • Using questions and feedback to enhance learning and decrease forgetting
  • Types of assessments used before, during and following learning activities
  • Setting pass/fail scores for criterion-referenced assessments
  • Interpreting item (question) and test statistics to determine reliability
  • Basic principles for making assessments support organizational goals
  • Emerging practices including mobile delivery and assessment for informal learning initiatives


About the Speaker:

Doug Peterson is the Demonstrations   Systems Manager at Questionmark. He previously spent 21 years with a large telecommunications company – nine years doing first-line field services support and 12  years in Workforce Development. He has researched and written IT training materials, taught in the classroom and over the Web, authored self-paced, Web-based e-learning courses and created many quizzes and tests for learners.
