Taking the Mystery Out of Training Needs Assessments: A Practical and Proven Approach

Presenter: Terrence Donahue, Corporate Director of Learning at Emerson

Session Description: https://youtu.be/IqRqngReEH8

This session will explore how a Fortune 500 manufacturing company with 90,000 employees in 175 locations created a process to determine the true training needs of its employees. It conducts three types of needs assessment: when there is a request for training; when it is determining the future needs of the company based on changing business, technology, acquisitions, and skills upgrades; and when it evaluates its existing comprehensive learning curriculum to determine if the need to run these programs still exists. In this session, the speaker will share the actual processes and tools the company created and refined to ensure that all needs assessments are effective and efficient.

Application on the Job:

  1. Conduct an effective training needs assessment whenever a request for training is presented.
  2. Conduct a proactive training needs assessment to determine the future training needs of your organization.
  3. Conduct an evaluative training needs assessment of your existing curriculum in your current learning and development portfolio to determine if the need for your programs still exist.
