Speech Coaching Guidelines for Learning Professionals

Robert Portnoy, Ph.D., CPLP, SPHR
President, Executive Communications Training Company

Workplace Learning and Performance professionals (WLPs) observe managers and technical experts communicating their messages in a variety of ways including impromptu speaking opportunities and during formal presentations. Whether or not they are directly asked for their input as speech coaches, WLPs are often uniquely positioned to help these presenters improve their communication skills in ways that can make significant contributions to business performance.

Participants in the session can expect to develop speech-coaching skills including applied use of a learning model and an assessment tool. The session will present guidelines for speech coaching and assessment methods with opportunities for applied practice. Participants will also become familiar with the Presentation Skills Learning System ™ on which the session will be based.

As a result of this session, you will be able to:

  • Utilize speech coaching guidelines to give feedback and influence the speaking effectiveness of others
  • Assess speaking effectiveness for content value, visual and vocal variety, provocative questioning, and story- telling
  • In learning speech coaching to help others, you will also learn how to become your own speech coach

Each participant will receive a two-sided laminated reference sheet (and transparency marker) that includes speech-coaching guidelines and an assessment template for real-time coaching and assessments during the session and for use as a job aid after the session.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Robert Portnoy has over 25 years experience in Fortune 100 companies coaching executives, managers, and technical experts in designing and delivering presentations and improving interpersonal communication skills. His professional experience also includes designing and delivering corporate training, managing the learning function and improving human performance.

In addition to his doctorate and two masters degrees, Rob has earned the CPLP® and SPHR certifications and is also a licensed speech pathologist and a research fellow from the Mayo Clinic.
